Developers plan new Balinese Room in Galveston
Associated Press

Three Southeast Texas developers plan to rebuild the legendary Balinese Room on a pier extending from the Galveston seawall - as it was before Hurricane Ike smashed it in 2008.

The plan is to come before the Galveston Zoning Board of Adjustment March 5. One of the project managers, Doug Thomas, tells the Houston Chronicle ( that the partners "want people to come to Galveston, have dinner, see a show and then stay at a local hotel."

Thomas said plans are to be open by 2016 if all goes according to plan.

The nightclub was a gambling hall during the 1940s and `50s before state officials shut it down. During its heyday, its customers were entertained by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Phil Harris and George Burns.
