As cases mount, county launches child abuse unit

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A South Texas county that's seen the number of child abuse cases more than double in recent years has launched an investigative unit to tamp down the problem.

The Cameron County district attorney's office launched the unit July 1 and it features two prosecutors and an investigator.

Prosecutor Stephanie Rollins says that the number of child abuse cases "continues to dramatically increase." The instances of abuse constitute 20 percent of all court cases in the county. The number of cases rose from 248 in 2010 to 589 last year.

The unit intends to work with law enforcement and school districts to ensure abuse is detected early and minimize the impact on a child.
