Court fight over Texas abortion law enters 2nd day

10/23/2013

An abortion clinic operator has told a federal court that finding doctors is already difficult and that new requirements would force her to begin closing facilities.

Amy Hagstrom Miller told the court Tuesday that if her doctors must have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of her clinics in Fort Worth, McAllen and San Antonio, she'll have to shut them down.

The federal court challenge to one of the toughest abortion laws in the country entered a second day. Closing arguments were scheduled for Wednesday.

The law limiting when, where and how women may obtain an abortion passed the Legislature this summer despite a 12-plus hour Democratic filibuster and massive protests on both sides of the issue at the state Capitol.
