Consumer spending is showing its biggest increase in four months, helped by a jump in demand for automobiles. The Commerce Department says spending rose 0.4 percent in July after three lackluster months. Personal incomes were up 0.2 percent in July, less than expected but at least an improvement over June when incomes had not risen at all.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami says residents from the Carolinas north should keep a close eye on Hurricane Earl. Forecasters say Earl could become a major, Category 3 hurricane today and make it all the way to Category 4 later in the week. It could have an encounter with the U.S. coast.

Ground Zero Mosque Plans Used as Political Tactic
8/17/2010 7:00:00 AM
The controversial debate surrounding plans to build an Islamic mosque near ground zero seems to be giving the Republican party an upper hand. A senior Republican says that GOP candidates are being encouraged to talk about the issue as much as possible because their side is viewed favorably by voters.
Meanwhile, a House Democratic leadership aide says Democrats need to stress campaign issues such as economic recovery and saving social security, and not focus on the ground zero mosque. But despite Democratic efforts, the topic dominated morning talk shows Sunday, with Republicans calling President Obama insensitive for supporting the right of Muslims to build an Islamic Center that would include a mosque two blocks from where the 9/11 terrorist attacks took place.
Some predicted political repercussions for Democrats in November's congressional election, even though they agreed with Obama that freedom of religion is a vital part of American ...

8/9/2010 1:00:00 AM
A Lake County mother was arrested at a children’s splash park after her white shirt got wet. Now, she's suing the city of Tavares over her arrest. She told WFTV police took an embarrassing situation and turned it into discrimination.
A hot day in April at the Tavares splash park turned into Janet Lovett's own personal nightmare. She took her 7-year-old son to cool off, but before the day was done she found herself behind bars, facing an arrest record for obstruction of justice and resisting arrest without violence.
The Full Story:
“I started shaking. I feel nervous. My son was inside park with husband. I was alone,” she told WFTV. A park employee asked Lovett to leave, because the white t-shirt she was wearing had become wet and her padded bra was showing. She says she left, but outside the park gate a police officer approached her and ...

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) _ Advertising sin in Sin City is a legal no-no. A federal appeals court has upheld a Nevada law that bars legal brothels in Nevada from advertising in Las Vegas, Reno and other places where prostitution is illegal. The "houses'' are allowed to operate in some rural areas. Attorneys for the Shady Lady Ranch were among those who challenged the law. But a federal appeals panel refused to reconsider an earlier decision that gave the ad ban a legal O-K. Ten counties in Nevada allow legal hookers. But prostitution remains illegal in the counties where Las Vegas and Reno are located.

STREET SIGN SWIPING
Too many wild men are swiping the "Wildman Road'' signs. So, officials in Greene County, Ohio, are giving up trying to replace them. Wildman Road is in a rural area, making the signs easier to steal. County Engineer Robert Geyer say most of the missing Wildman signs are probably hanging in garages, bedrooms or dorms.

A homeowner in his underwear chased down and tackled a 14-year-old who was pulling a late-night prank called the "ding dong ditch." The teen suffered a cut on his elbow, a bruise over his eye and a bloody lip, according to the police report. But the homeowner caught the boy on his property…was the homeowner justified in self defense to do what he did? Or does the teen’s parents have a legal case?

Playboy is now safe to read at work -- at least a Playboy website is. Playboy has launched TheSmokingJacket.com, for the guys who claim they only read Playboy for the articles. The new website won't have any of the naked babes that make Playboy.com definitely N-S-F-W -- not suitable for work. The new site doesn't even mention the word Playboy, so it won't be blocked by the boss' firewall or censoring software.
They're itsy bitsy and teenie weenie -- but these aren't yellow polka dot bikinis. Designers are showing the swimwear you'll be seeing next year at the beach. The little bikini is back in a big way. The suits were on the runway at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2011 in Miami Beach. Gold, hot pink and turquoise are the popular colors. Not all the swimsuits are two-piece, though.
