Council OKs $1.25 million settlement in police shooting

Wishing to prevent a costly and painful trial, Austin City Council members will give $1.25 million to the three children of a man shot and killed by an officer in what is the largest city settlement following a police shooting.

Council members voted 6-1 to approve the settlement Thursday — one year and 12 days after former Detective Charles Kleinert shot Larry Eugene Jackson Jr. Kleinert said his gun accidentally discharged during a struggle with Jackson, and a grand jury has since indicted him on a manslaughter charge.
