DPS didn’t recommend sending Guard to border, but thinks it may help

Neither Col. Steve McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, nor Major General John Nichols, adjutant general of Texas Military Forces, recommended to Gov. Rick Perry that he deploy up to 1,000 National Guard troops to the border. But, both McCraw and Nichols, in testimony Tuesday before the House Select Committee on the Fiscal Impact of Texas Border Support Operations, said they felt the open-ended Guard deployment could help reduce illegal border-crossings.
