Obama Calls for 'Soul Searching' on Gun Violence
President Barack Obamasaid Tuesday that the U.S. needs a "fundamental shift" in public opinion before the government can take steps to curb school shootings and gun violence.
Mr. Obama's comments came hours after a student was killed at an Oregon school. The shooting was the 74th since the December 2012 Newtown, Conn., massacre that killed 20 students and six school officials, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, the gun-control organization funded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
"We're the only developed country on earth where this happens," Mr. Obama said in an interview broadcast on Tumblr, a blogging site. "And it happens now once a week. And it—it's a one-day story. There's no place else like this."
