Pastor group seeks to increase turnout 20 percent among church members

For the second straight year, Gov. Rick Perry has been invited to help church pastors fan statewide voter registration and turnout efforts — a move that could also steel his support among Christian conservatives.

Fall luncheons are planned in cities including Austin. They will come a year after the Republican governor helped urge voter approval of a state constitutional ban on gay marriage and attended closed-door gatherings of about 2,000 pastors in a drive to push registration and turnout.

The Texas Restoration Project, which says it spurred the bulk of more than 100,000 new voter registrants in the fall, has lately focused on other states. But another effort to promote church involvement by fostering regional "pastor councils" is taking form.
