'Woooooooo. Pig. Sooie!': University of Arkansas Razorbacks granted patent for hog call crowd cheer
The University of Arkansas' distinctive 'Hog Call' has been granted a federal trademark registration.
The university announced Friday that it is believed to be the first college or university in the nation to receive a trademark for its cheer.
The sound mark of the cheer and the previously registered, 'Wooo Pig Sooie!' are intended to protect the institution's long-standing tradition and signature cheer from unlicensed commercial use.
The trademark is for a crowd cheering the words: 'Woooooooo Pig Sooie! Woooooooo Pig Sooie! Woooooooo Pig Sooie! Razorbacks!'
The hog call patent is atypical in that it covers a sound and not words or a design, notes Forbes.
The university identifies December 31, 1929 as the first use of the Hog Call — based on media accounts.
One fan told told KHBS he's happy about the calls recognition and for the protection it offers from other, potentially thieving, states.
'It’s homegrown. It was made for Arkansas, and it needs to stay with Arkansas. Wooo Pig Sooie,' said Jerry Morano.
