Texas father to stand trial in killing of drunk driver

A father faces trial on charges that he fatally shot a drunken driver who killed his two sons in a wreck in rural Southeast Texas.  Opening statements are expected Tuesday in the murder trial of David Barajas in Angleton.  Authorities say Barajas fatally shot Jose Banda after the December 2012 accident near Alvin, about 30 miles southeast of Houston. Barajas' sons, 12-year-old David Jr. and 11-year-old Caleb were killed in the wreck.  Defense attorney Sam Cammack says his client did not kill Banda.  No witnesses have named Barajas as the shooter. Authorities never recovered a weapon.  If convicted, Barajas faces up to life in prison.

86-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WRITES STEAMY ROMANCE NOVEL
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - It isn't quite 50 Shades of Gray. But a book written by an 86-year-old Utah woman is getting attention because of the steamy content of the book about a bored housewife. Georgia Gorringe tells KUTV it took her five years to write the novel available on Kindle and Amazon. The story is about a woman who listens to talk radio and is mesmerized by a man's voice. The writer's adult daughter says she was taken aback by the amount of steaminess in the book. Gorringe insists the book "No Good-Bye" is all fiction - but her daughter says much is based on her mom's life.

MUG SHOT T-SHIRT
MADISON, Maine (AP) - So, what does one wear to be booked into jail? If the "one" is Bobby Burt of Pittsfield, Maine, it's was a T-shirt featuring his mug shot. Burt served a 48-hour sentence for drunken driving back in June. And when showed up for his booking photo, he was sporting a T-shirt with the mug shot from his arrest on an orange shirt. The shirt had the words: "Sponsored by Bud Light and Somerset County Sheriff." The mug shot is getting a lot of added attention, thanks to The Smoking Gun. Jail officials say there is no policy on what inmates can or cannot wear for booking photos.

101-YEAR-OLD MAN KEEPS WORKING
EAST HANOVER, N.J. (AP) - He just turned 101 years old. And part of the way Herman "Hy" Goldman marked the occasion was to do something he has done for the past 73 years: Go to work. Goldman works four days a week at Capitol Lighting in East Hanover, New Jersey. His co-workers observed his birthday on Monday. Aside from a brief absence to serve in the Army during World War II, Goldman has worked at Capitol Lighting since 1941.

BOGUS CASH FOR A PUPPY
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. (AP) - It was a real puppy. But it was paid for with bogus bills. Police in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania say three men used $500 in counterfeit cash to pay for a puppy. PennLive.com reports it happened Monday night in Earl Township. Police say the men passed five bogus $100 bills to pay for a Shih Tzu pup that was up for sale. Police are looking for the suspects, who they say left in a gray or silver Mercedes SUV.

WHALE IN RIVER
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - You don't usually find whales in a river - but one has been spotted in the Elizabeth River of Virginia. And the Coast Guard is asking boaters to stay away from it. An advisory from the Coast Guard says a whale between 35 and 45 feet has been spotted in the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth. The advisory asks boaters not to feed the animal, which authorities believe is a sei whale. The whale could be ill or disoriented - since boaters report it seems to be swimming without a clear direction. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says sei whales are usually seen in deeper waters of ocean areas far from the coastline.
