AISD Board Moves Toward Renaming Confederate-Named Schools

The Austin Independent School District is aiming to rid itself of any school that bears the name of a Confederate leader.  At a Monday work session, the school board decided to move forward with a plan to have all of them renamed by August.

Those schools include:

  • Eastside Memorial High School's Johnston Campus
  • Reagan High School
  • Lanier High School
  • Fulmore Middle School
  • Allan Elementary

It's not the first time AISD has sought to change a school with a name bearing a Confederate leader.  In 2016 the district approved a change to Robert E. Lee Elementary.  However, this effort is slightly different than the push to rename Lee.  Whereas in 2016 the district opened the floor for public debate over whether or not the school should see any change at all, this year AISD says it has no interest in hearing from anyone opposed to a name change.  Instead, the board is seeking recommendations for new names only.

A vote still needs to be held, but it's expected that the name changes will be approved unanimously.  If that happens, AISD estimates it will cost more than $320,000, which would include changing names on buildings, flooring, and athletic uniforms.
