A tax swap plan between Austin and AISD is still getting plenty of pushback. Council member Ellen Troxclair said there are a whole host of problems she sees in the plan that proposes to raise your property tax by as much as 14.4% while AISD lowers its rate. Troxclair called it a convoluted plan that would leave taxpayers confused and probably paying more in the long run.
She concerned that the city of Austin itself has six other districts aside from AISD. The district also freezes property taxes for people 65 and over so there's the issue of Austin raising the senior homestead exemption since a drop in AISD taxes does little to help those whose taxes have been frozen.
The councilmember added, even if the city moved forward with the plan there is no guarantee AISD would lower its rate, and that would leave taxpayers in the lurch.
Both Troxclair and Jimmy Flannigan in District 6 plan to lead a petition against the plan.
