An emergency plan to house homeless people downtown in some city buildings is being looked at Austin City Hall.
Council directed staff to look at what buildings could be used for such a purpose for about two months. Councilmember Ora Houston said other area governments such as Travis County and the State should also be doing this, believing this is a problem that is bigger than just downtown Austin.
Some on the council like Ann Kitchen think they should go further. Kitchen said  they should look at temporary shelters in other parts of town...Because homelessness is affecting every neighborhood, particularly in Kitchen's South Austin district.
The Council has been working on long-term housing solutions with the county and other stakeholders and are awaiting a report.
