New sustainable plans for Austin bike lanes are in the works. Austin Transportation Department Street Designer Alison Mills said her recent trip to the Netherlands at a cycling conference called Velo-City she acknowledged Austin's Dutch design heritage as some can be seen on the city's bike lanes along South Lamar that aim to keep cars and cyclists away from each other.
Mills says they will move forward with their complete streets plan and a connected network of bike lanes and urban trails.  having more cyclists on the roads with cars, what's referred to as "Mode-share" doesn't mean all traffic problems are solved, she continued, other cities with 30% mode-share still face the same problems Austin does.
