Capital Metro begins AV testing

A new system is being tested in Austin that is designed to communicate information about road conditions, signs, speed limits, and other data to self-driving vehicles.  Jason JonMichael with the Transportation Department says Austin is an innovative hub and was chosen to take part because the system needs to be tested in real-world scenarios

He says the technology basically digitizes the road for autonomous vehicles, and could one day be used in Capital Metro’s self-driving buses.

Meanwhile, Capital Metro will begin testing self-driving vehicles in the overnight hours beginning Monday in downtown Austin.  Those tests will last three weeks.  No passengers will be allowed in the vehicles during testing and each will have a police escort.
