Environmentalists Hail Coal Plant Closings

Environmentalists are pointing to Texas as the latest example of the decline of the coal industry. Over the past three weeks, Luminant Energy has announced they’re closing 3 coal-powered plants in Texas. Public Citizen Texas Director Adrian Shelly said the closings will lead to immediate public health improvements and long-term climate benefits. "With these plants, we were looking at some of the largest emitters of mercury, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide, and these are air pollutants that have real immediate health consequences."

Vistra Energy is Luminant’s parent company. Their CEO released a statement saying they were forced to close the three Texas power plants due to the drop in energy prices significantly hurting their operating revenues.
