IRS building on Lockdown in South Austin

The Internal Revenue Service building in South Austin has been evacuated and locked down following the discovery of a suspicious package Wednesday morning.

According to the Austin Police Department, a bomb-sniffing dog alerted handlers to the shoebox-sized package in the mailroom shortly before 7:00 a.m.  As a precaution, more than 500 people were evacuated, along with a nearby daycare facility and the Veterans Affairs office.  Both the daycare and VA facility have been reopened and people have been allowed back inside.

As of 9:00 a.m., APD says the investigation is continuing with both federal and city officials combing the building room by room, floor by floor.  Once the package is taken into possession by the bomb squad, it will be x-rayed and then taken to a safe location for disposal.
