New Officers to Beat the Streets

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo had to justify the need for more police officers to the city council. Councilman Bill Spelman wanted to know what these 59 new police officers were going to be doing. He did the math and says that 70 percent of all new city positions are going to the Austin Police Department.  Acevedo says he wanted 126 new officers. Also added were 38 civilian positions.  The new hires will be added to the property crimes unit, as well as the night shift.
