A big upgrade to Travis County's StarFlight helicopter fleet is approved by Travis County Commissioners.

Commissioners approve spending $34 million taxpayer dollars on three new StarFlight Helicopters. Each new chopper will cost about $11 million dollars with modifications. StarFlight Program Director Casey Ping says it was time.

"There's been some improvements in technology. Some of our customers, the hospitals that we serve, have been interested in more capability beyond what our current aircraft can provide."

Ping says the $34 million dollars they're spending is a package deal. "It buys three aircraft. Our current fleet is worth between nine and eleven million dollars, depending on how you evaluate them."

The County could sell the older helicopters elsewhere instead of trading them in. Seton Hospital has donated $10 million towards the new fleet purchase. The new helicopters should be delivered to the county by the end of next year.
