UPDATE--Pedestrian Fatality

Austin Police Department's preliminary investigation shows that a Silver Pontiac Firebird was traveling northbound on the N. IH-35 service road in a right turn only lane intended for traffic to turn right onto Rutherford Lane on Thursday, August 7. The vehicle continued traveling north after the right turn only lane stopped, left the roadway and struck a pedestrian that was walking in a private drive of Extended Stay Hotel parking lot, 8221 N. IH-35 northbound service road. 

 

The pedestrian, 46-year-old Malcom Williams was pronounced at the scene by Austin/Travis County EMS. The driver of the Pontiac fled the scene on foot and was detained by a citizen that had witnessed the crash. The driver was held until police arrived and took him into custody.  The driver, 21-year-old, Julio Rodriguez-Torres, was arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter, 2nd Degree Felony and Failure to Stop and Render Aid causing death, 2nd Degree Felony.   
This case is still being investigated. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-4424. This is Austin’s 31st fatal traffic crash and the 37th fatality of 2014. At this time in 2013, there were 50 fatality crashes and 51 fatalities.8221 N. IH-35 northbound service road
