2 held after off-duty agent in South Texas slain

SANTA MONICA, Texas (AP) - Two suspects have been detained after an off-duty Border Patrol agent was fatally shot and another man wounded during a fishing trip in South Texas. The Willacy County Sheriff's Office says two men were in custody Monday. Further details weren't immediately released on the suspects in Sunday night's shootings near Santa Monica during an attempted robbery. Border Patrol spokesman Omar Zamora earlier said the agent was armed, with a gun in his holster, and the robbers apparently opened fire after noticing the weapon. The name of the slain agent and further details on the wounded man weren't immediately released Monday. Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence says similar holdups have happened to people who have been fishing, robbers drive by, then return.
