Austin City Council weighs objection to Secure Communities detentions

Council member suggests city look at alternatives to using Travis County booking facility.

Austin City Council Member Laura Morrison wants the Travis County jail to stop holding inmates on possible immigration violations — and she’s suggesting the city look at some alternatives to using the county’s booking facility unless Sheriff Greg Hamilton stops honoring the controversial “ICE detainers.”

Morrison has sponsored a resolution, slated for a City Council vote Thursday evening, that would put Austin on record as opposing the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s Secure Communities program, which is aimed at helping ICE agents identify jail inmates for possible deportation.
