Local Marine killed in Afghanistan

Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer, 23, a mortarman with 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, died Wednesday in combat in Helmand province. He was serving his second tour in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spitzer was a veteran of the Sangin Valley campaign in Helmand province, according to commentators on a memorial post to him on the Sangin Valley Gun Club Facebook page.  The first Marine battalions deployed there in 2010. The last Marines withdrew from Sangin in May, leaving Afghan troops in charge.

"Spitz ... always was so funny yet super serious when it came to being a Marine," wrote Matthew Mistretta, who attended boot camp and infantry training with him.  Pete Cuadros wrote: "Rest easy brother, we have the watch now."

Spitzer, of New Braunfels, Tex., enlisted in the Corps on Aug. 17, 2009.    http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/jun/26/marine-killed-afghanistan-thomas-spitzer/
