National Guard is heading to border

President Barack Obama told lawmakers Tuesday he would send up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as part of a comprehensive plan to help provide security in light of escalating violence.

The administration announced the deployment as part of a $500 million plan to secure the southwest border, and ahead of Republican efforts in Congress to require National Guard troops and additional money in a war supplemental spending bill.

Guard members would serve until federal law enforcement agencies can recruit and train additional officers and agents to replace them, an administration official said.
