Prosecutor in S. Texas scandal loses law license

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A former top prosecutor in South Texas has lost his law license after his sentencing to 13 years in federal prison for taking bribes. The Brownsville Herald reports that former Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos has been ordered to surrender his license pending his appeal of his corruption conviction from last year. The State Bar of Texas says Villalobos did not answer its request. He is currently serving his sentence at a federal prison in Kentucky. Villalobos' arrest and conviction was one of several in a years-long investigation that also ensnared a state district judge. He was convicted of taking part in a bribery involving several criminal cases, including a murder convict who fled after receiving a highly unusual bond before his sentence was to begin.
