School districts considering closures

Inside the century-old, red-brick walls of Westport High School, the tiled front hall has a trophy case filled with awards for the Junior ROTC program, the pride of the school. A row of double doors opens into an auditorium ringed with balcony seating.
But the heavy curtains — with their appliquéd “W” — are looking a little tattered.

“It's not something you would have spirit about,” said Antonia Martin, 17, a Westport junior and budding thespian.

Next year, the stately old building will be bereft of students. It is one of 26 schools that will close at the end of this academic year as part of a massive restructuring plan in the Kansas City school district.

In San Antonio, a similar but smaller scale proposal to close 13 schools goes hand in hand with a multiyear plan for $1.24 billion in bond funds to help rebuild the district.
