Teachers lobby for increased funding

Texas spends an average of about $9,000 per student each school year at public schools. Austin area school districts pay in more based on the Robin Hood system. They are not the only districts hoping to change that.   "We are dooming a generation of these children," said former Travis County District Judge John Dietz at an Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) conference.  These were strong words about an education system Dietz ruled as being unconstitutionally funded, strong words many Texas public school teachers at the ATPE conference couldn't agree with more.

"There's just not enough money," said Hector Cruz, language arts teacher at Weslaco High School.  Weslaco is small town in South Texas ranked as the city with the highest crime rate in the state.  Cruz said their classrooms are filled with 31 students per teacher and its getting worse by the day.
