Teachers pay tied into special session

With a rise in teacher salary and benefits added to the special session, State Representative Trent Ashby said this legislation matters to tens of thousands of educators across Texas, both active and retired. Especially since retired teachers who don't qualify for social security benefits receive an average pension of $2000 a month.
He added health care is a huge burden on many retired teachers who have to live on that amount.  Ashby acknowledged the taxpayer shouldn't relieve the entire burden but felt those who spend their careers educating Texas' future leaders.
