Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has set another record for passenger traffic, with 1,409,277 passengers arriving and departing in April.

That marks an increase of 6.4-percent from April of 2018 when the airport recorded 1,324,938 passengers.

The numbers also put April of 2019 as the seventh-highest month for passenger traffic in airport history.  July of 2018 still stands as the all-time monthly high when 1,511,634 passengers flew into and out of ABIA.

ABIA’s 20-year master plan envisions a massive expansion, including the addition of 32 new gates, a brand new runway, expanded ticketing, baggage claim, and 1000 new parking spaces.

Central Texas transportation officials have also been in talks with Austin’s airport about an overhaul of Highway 71 near the ABIA entrance as part of the planned expansion.  ABIA Executive Director Jim Smith has said there needs to be enough room to accomodate tens of millions more passengers in the coming decades.

The 20-year master plan is projected to cost around $4-billion within the first decade of construction.
