New Highway 71 project getting underway in Bastrop area

Ground was broken today on a new TxDOT Colorado River project in Bastrop.

Local dignitaries gathered this morning to break ground on a road and bridge project on State Highway 71 at the Colorado River. TxDOT’s Diann Hodges says when construction starts crews will “widen the current bridge that’s there, the mainlane bridge. We’re going to add some frontage road bridges. And we’re also replacing the bridges that go over the railroad.”

Hodges says construction is beginning in days spearheaded by Capital Excavation Company. “This is a project that actually costs $50.4 million dollars. And with that 50 million dollars, we’re actually going to be able to construct nine new bridges in this area.”

Hodges says the project includes a westbound exit ramp across the river and and eastbound entrance ramp at the Union Pacific Railroad. It’s expected to enhance safety and mobility for all modes of transit. Weather permitting, the project is slated for completion in Winter of 2022.
