Austin City Council Approves Red River Cultural District Improvements

Austin City Hall

Austin City Council unanimously agrees to make improvements to the Red River Cultural District or “crack alley” as many business owners have called it

The alley, located on Red River Street near Seventh Street, provides a cut-through to Waller Creek

They council agreed to fast-track improvements after about 75 business leaders held an emergency meeting last week with city officials and law enforcement over their concerns about recent shootings in the area

Some of the improvements to the district would include fencing, improvements to sidewalks and curbs, more trash cans, better lighting and the installation of new planter boxes and landscaping

The project is estimated to cost $1.3 million, according to a memorandum published by the city last year

An official start date has not yet been chosen but is expected to begin as early as November 1st
