The Austin Police Department says Assistant Chief Justin Newsom has resigned from the department, effective immediately.  Newsom had been with APD for nearly 23 years.

The reason behind Newsom’s abrupt decision is still unclear, however, city officials have confirmed that an official complaint was filed against Newsom just one day before his departure.  Specifics of that complaint have not been given.

Newsom was a key player in APD’s ongoing efforts to address homelessness, specifically in the downtown sector.

Other assistant chiefs are expected to be reassigned until Chief Brian Manley names a permanent replacement.
