  • Austin City Council is considering the purchase of a motel in order to house the homeless
  • The property being considered is located at 2711 South IH-35 according to city documents
  • If purchased and renovated, the property would be able to provide shelter and support services to more than 80 people
  • The city says the location would be ideal as it is close to where those experiencing homelessness already live, it is accessible to public transportation and fairly close to health care facilities
  • The project under consideration would cost the city an estimated $8 million
  • The total cost includes the purchase of the building, closing costs, renovations and other related fees
  • The city is also considering other potential sites to convert into more housing but have not yet disclosed any locations
