The Lockhart Independent School District announced this week it will provide school supplies and a Chromebook for every student in the upcoming school year. The plan will cover all students, from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The only item parents will need to purchase for students is a backpack, the district said. For parents who are unable to purchase a backpack, officials say a variety if charitable organizations are stepping up to help.

Under the plan, every student will be issued a Chromebook for use throughout the year, transforming LISD into what’s known as a “one-to-one” district two years ahead of schedule. The term one-to-one is given to a school district that provides its students with things like laptops, tablets, and other movile devices. Or, in other words, every one student gets one piece of educational technology to call their own for the entire year.

LISD began its work toward becoming a one-to-one district in 2015. All teachers will be trained prior to the start of the school year to ensure a smooth transition.

“At a time when so much is out of our control, the district leadership team and the Board of Trustees decided we would focus on the things we could control to build resiliency for our students and district to ensure success in student learning and growth,” said Superintendent Mark Estrada. “We are proud to support our students and families, especially during these difficult times. With these supplies, the technology devices, and the Lion Link internet services, we feel confident our students will be well-equipped for success.”
