The Texas Department of Public Safety this week announced the arrest of two more people in connection with rioting and vandalism during protests near the Texas State Capitol in May.

DPS Special Agents took Joe Paul Mitchell, 56, of Austin into custody, along with another 16-year-old boy.  Mitchell was arrested for rioting, resisting arrest, and evading arrest.  Video posted on social media appears to show Mitchell attacking and kicking a DPS patrol vehicle during the protest.

According to DPS, Mitchell first resisted arrest when he was confronted, then tried to make a getaway on foot.  He was aided by other protesters who surrounded DPS troopers who tried to take him into custody.  Eventually, the situation was brought under control and Mitchell was removed from the scene.

The 16-year-old boy is charged with resisting arrest, criminal mischief, evading arrest, and two counts of riot.  DPS says the teen was seen on multiple surveillance feeds spray painting the Capitol and Governor’s Mansion.

The teen’s family reportedly coordinated with DPS to help bring their son into custody.

DPS continues to search for other agitators who may have been involved.
