Gov. Abbott backs facemasks and warns of 2nd shutdown

Governor Greg Abbott

COVID-19 is spreading at an unacceptable rate in Texas, said Governor Greg Abbott.

He continued, people not following safety guidelines to slow the spread of coronavirus are jeopardizing lives and the state’s economy. “I know that some people feel that wearing a mask is inconvenient or that its an infringement of freedom…but I also know that wearing a mask will help us to keep Texas open.” The Governor explained, closing everything down again is the last option, but it is an option that is on the table if covid-19 related infections and hospitalization numbers continue to increase and hospitals start to run out of room to treat patients.

But presently, Gov. Abbott isn’t mandating masks statewide, but he isn’t stopping local governments from stepping in. He explained the decision to mandate masks is better made by local areas instead of a one-size-fits-all strategy.
