Austin City Councilmembers react to Foster shooting death

In the wake of Garrett Foster’s death, who pointed a rifle at a driver and was shot in retaliation, the Austin City Council is considering pumping $5-million into a new Office of Violence Prevention. Among the goals would be reducing people’s access to guns.

Council member Jimmy Flannigan is pushing for a complete retooling of the police department structure, including the removal of the position of police chief altogether.

Austin city council member Natasha Harper-Madison appears to have already chosen a side amid the investigation into the shooting death of Foster. She accused Chief Brian Manley of politicizing Garrett Foster’s death, and criticizes APD for allowing the driver who is alleged to have shot Foster to be released.

Madison says the driver intentionally plowed into the crowd as an “act of intimidation.”
