Gov. Abbott supports way to fund APD

The Capital
Governor Abbott voices more support for taking the Austin Police Department out from under the city council.
It’s a proposal from former state representative Terry Keel who says the state comptroller would take the taxes normally collected by the city and put it all in the state treasury to be used by the Department of Public Safety and in turn fully funding APD.
Keel said losing those taxes would be the council’s “worst nightmare.”  But he added because Austin is the seat of state government, the state has a Constitutional duty to step in when public safety is in question.
