Airbnb Blocks Thousands of Parties at Local Rentals

In the Summer of 2020, Airbnb took action to ban parties on its platform in an effort to prioritize public health in the early days of the pandemic, as well as to try to prevent and deter community disruption and parties.  Airbnb rolled out a number of systems aimed at trying to block and stop potential unauthorized parties, including what is called the “Under-25 Anti-Party System,” which restricts guests under the age of 25 from booking entire home listings if they do not have a history of positive reviews.

On Wednesday, Airbnb released numbers showing more than 3300 unauthorized parties in Austin were blocked last year.  Statewide, the number is above 48,000.

“We believe it worked,” the company said in a press release.

Holidays proved to be a big test for the Airbnb party ban, but the report indicates that most holiday weekends in 2021 tended to be fairly tame and quiet for the Austin area:

  • 4th of July: Over 11,300 statewide (over 1700 in Austin)
  • Halloween: Over 7,600 statewide (over 1000 in Austin)
  • New Year’s Eve: Over 10,800 statewide (over 1400 in Austin)

“These initiatives are about trying to find the needles in the haystacks and stop potentially disruptive parties in service to our Hosts and neighbors,” the company said.
