City wants an Austin Sunflower field cut down

Sunflowers

Hundreds of South Austin neighbors are fighting back against the City of Austin who says a beloved field of sunflowers must come down.

The Austin Code Compliance Department issued a citation to the owner of a property where sunflowers are growing tall. The Austin Transportation Department reportedly said the flowers impede visibility on the right-of-way. An ordinance prohibits grass or weeds taller than 12 inches.

The sunflowers have been a bright spot for neighbors during the pandemic, supporting endangered bees and butterflies. The owner posted on Nextdoor about the citation and more than 200 people reacted in favor of the flowers. Some have asked him to fight it and offered to pay for the citations.

The owner has one week to remove all of the flowers from the property. He invited people to come take photos and videos of the flowers before he has to take them down.
