4. LIMITED CAMPING BAN REINSTATED

Austin City Council pass some clarifications to their homelessness ordinances.  Council says while you cannot camp on a sidewalk, you can sit and lie there, but you also cannot do so within 15 feet of a doorway.   But the decision was not unanimous, Councilmember Natasha Harper Madison says criminalisation is counter productive to solving homelessness.

“It does nothing but hide and shuffle around our homeless neighbors, making it difficult to connect them with services, which is supposed to be the point,” she says.

Despite this, Harper Madison says the amendments made are improvements to what was originally proposed by Mayor Adler.

Zoning changes have been approved for a planned mixed-use development known as 4700 Riverside.  The five apartment complexes currently on the site will be torn down to make way for the 97-acre development, which will include up to 565 low-income housing units.  100 homeless people will also be moved into the current apartments until their demolition.
