Leander ISD Lowers COVID Risk Level

COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations have been falling quickly across Central Texas in recent weeks.  The consistent decline led Austin Public Health on Tuesday to officially move the city down to Stage 3 on its COVID risk chart.  And now, the Leander Independent School District has made a similar change.

Effective today, Leander ISD has been moved down to “Phase Yellow” on its own COVID risk chart.  Like many places in the region, the district has seen a very welcome and steady drop in its numbers for consecutive weeks, including overall case counts, positivity rate, and other metrics.

Changes on Leander campuses include:

  • Masks now recommended for ALL individuals while indoors,
  • Normal water fountain use can resume,
  • No limitations on the number of audience/spectators at extracurricular events.

It’s a stark contrast from earlier in the semester.  As the school year began, Leander ISD quickly became a focal point of health officials as the number of cases rapidly shot upward, even prompting the Williamson County and Cities Health District at one point to recommend a full closure of the district’s campuses to allow for the case numbers to subside.
