Military installations across Texas contribute an estimated $148.8 billion to the state’s economy and support nearly 629,000 direct and indirect jobs, according to a new economic impact study released Friday by Governor Greg Abbott’s office.
The report found that Texas’ military presence accounts for 212,524 direct jobs and 628,884 total jobs when indirect employment is included. The study analyzed the economic impact of active-duty service members, civilian employees, contractors, military dependents, and other personnel affiliated with U.S. military installations throughout the state.
Texas is home to 15 major U.S. military installations as well as the Army Transformation and Training Command headquarters.
Abbott said the state’s military installations play a critical role in national defense while also serving as major economic drivers for communities across Texas.
The study was conducted as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to support military communities and prepare for any future Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, under which the federal government periodically evaluates military installations for possible consolidation or closure.
The Texas Military Preparedness Commission, housed within the Office of the Governor, advises state leaders on defense and military issues and works with military communities to strengthen infrastructure, improve resiliency, and support mission readiness. The commission also seeks to position Texas military installations favorably should another round of BRAC occur.
