Pflugerville leaders could soon move to establish new rules governing the city’s use of artificial intelligence and surveillance technology.

The City Council is expected to consider a resolution Tuesday directing city staff to develop a policy framework covering the use of AI, surveillance systems, facial recognition technology, and data collection. The proposal also calls for safeguards on how information is stored, shared, and accessed.

If approved, city staff would draft an ordinance for council consideration at a later date. Under the proposal, voters could also be asked to decide whether those policies should be added to the City Charter, giving residents the final say on long-term oversight.

Supporters say the effort is intended to increase transparency and accountability as cities adopt new technology, while balancing public safety with privacy and civil liberties.
