Trump lawyer tries to block publication of new tell-all book about White House
President Trump is attempting to stop publication of an explosive new book that paints a portrait of his White House as dysfunctional and incompetent, according to the Washington Post.
Trump’s lawyers have sent a cease-and-desist letter to author Michael Wolff and his publisher to inform them that they are looking at possible libel charges in connection to the book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” the report said.
The book is expected to be published next week.
The letter sent by lawyer Charles Harder demanded publisher Henry Holt and Co. “immediately cease and desist from any further publication, release or dissemination of the book” or excerpts and summaries of its contents, the newspaper reported.
They also want a copy of the book.
“We are investigating numerous false and/or baseless statements that you have made about Mr. Trump,” Harder, a noted entertainment lawyer based in Beverly Hills, wrote to Wolff.
The letter also accuses Wolff and the publisher of “actual malice.”
“Actual malice (reckless disregard for the truth) can be proven by the fact that the Book admits in the Introduction that it contains untrue statements. Moreover, the Book appears to cite to no sources for many of its most damaging statements about Mr. Trump,” the letter said.
“Also, many of your so-called ‘sources’ have stated publicly that they never spoke to Mr. Wolff and/or never made the statements that are being attributed to them. Other alleged ‘sources’ of statements about Mr. Trump are believed to have no personal knowledge of the facts upon which they are making statements or are known to be unreliable and/or strongly biased against Mr. Trump,” it said.
According to a report on Axios, Wolff has dozens of hours of taped interviews he conducted with many of the top White House staffers, including former top strategist Steve Bannon and former deputy chief of staff Katie Walsh.
On Wednesday after excerpts of Wolff’s book began generating headlines, Trump’s lawyers sent Bannon a cease-and-desist lawyer ordering him to stop talking about the president and his family members because he had signed a confidentiality agreement after leaving the White House.
Trump also blasted Bannon in a statement saying that “when he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”
Later on Wednesday, Bannon in an interview on Breitbart News Tonight, a website he runs, called Trump a “great man.”
“You know I support him day in and day out,” he said.
