Travis County Commissioners Choose Route B for Steiner Ranch Evacuation Plan

Travis County commissioners voted unanimously to select an evacuation route out of Steiner Ranch

The vote came after wildfires destroyed several homes in the Steiner Ranch neighborhood in 2011 which prompted county officials to identify a need for an evacuation route

They subsequently approved $2.7 million in certificates of obligation to evaluate, design and construct an evacuation route

After a year of evaluating more than 12 possible routes, County officials were left with Route B and Route F as options.

The commissioners had a choice between Route B, a 900-foot gated connection between Flat Top Ranch Road and Montview Drive and Route F, a two-lane road connecting Flat Top Ranch Road and RM 620 which would be open to the public at all times

Route B will have a capacity of 750 vehicles per hour and can be constructed for $980,000

Route F would have had a capacity of 1,500 vehicles per hour but would have cost $7.2 million to construct

Route B was recommended by county staff to the commissioners as it was the more cost effective choice although they believe Route F is the better long-term solution

County staff were planning on choosing Route F and paying for it with grants from the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization but CAMPO decided to use the grant funds to the Mobility35 Capital Express Project in order to renovate I-35
