Several Austin council members want to use more than $1.5-million from Austin’s general fund to create what are called “democracy dollars.” It’s a west coast born program which would create vouchers for voters to use to contribute to a political candidate.
It could be part of a bond package for voters in November, but council member Ellen Troxclair has a major objection to this because paying taxes to the City of Austin is not a choice, it’s required by law and it would be unfair to voters whose tax dollars may wind up in the pocket of a candidate they don’t support.
These “Democracy Dollars” essentially uses tax money to create $25 vouchers for eligible voters to use to contribute to a political candidate in city election.
