The Austin City Council runoff election has come to a close.  Districts 1, 3, and 8 were in play.

In District 1, Natasha Harper-Madison won easily against Mariana Salazar to replace otugoing council member Ora Houston.  Houston announced earlier this year she was not seeking re-election to the dais.  Harper-Madison won 72{facfe2172b04f299937824a9c1283369198151460b73c952acd056710c9bd5ea} of the vote.

In District 3, 65{facfe2172b04f299937824a9c1283369198151460b73c952acd056710c9bd5ea} of the vote went to incumbent council member Sabino “Pio” Renteria” who, again, staved off a challenge from his sister, Susana Almanza.  Four years ago the brother-sister duo squared off for the first time in which Renteria first claimed victory.

District 8 was the closest of the three races.  Garnering 56{facfe2172b04f299937824a9c1283369198151460b73c952acd056710c9bd5ea} of the vote, democrat Paige Ellis managed to hold off the field’s lone conservative, Frank Ward, for the seat being vacated by Ellen Troxclair.

Troxclair had been the only conservative on the dais since Don Zimmerman lost his re-election bid to Jimmy Flannigan in 2016.  With Ellis’ victory, the Austin City Council will now be void of any conservative representation.

The new council members will take office in January.
