Austin City Council to spend more on Immigrant defense

Austin City Council agreed to spend more tax dollars on illegal immigrant legal aid which includes deportation defense. The City of Austin will continue funding the group American Gateways to the tune of $975,000.00.

Council also passed a resolution to spend up to $880,000.00 for so called "Undoing Racism training." Council's decision was praised by the activist community. Mayor Steve Alder explained the city would spend about $175-thousand to initiate the program with the option to extend it annually over the next 4-years.

And the Council agreed to pay out $144,000.00 to Austin and Manor ISDs to cover the start up costs for a total of 9 new Pre-K classrooms. Council said this is an effort to expand affordable childcare options for Austin and Travis County residents.
