Austin ISD faces budget shortfall

Tonight, the Austin school board will look at an early plan to consolidate schools to help bridge a growing budget gap. Board members will begin the process tonight of deciding the fate of some Austin school district campuses.

AISD will make the decision over the course of the next several months, but as of today there is no set list of which schools may be consolidated.  However, AISD board member Ann Teich says whatever decision is made, she wants robust community input. “Those are sacred properties in many, many ways. So, I know, I have confidence in our community engagement department.”

She says every neighborhood around any school that is being considered needs to be consulted.  The decision will be made based on enrollment, population, geography, and the utilization of space. A final list of schools is expected to be unveiled this summer.  AISD’s timeline shows the board expects to have the changes in place by the fall 2020 semester.
